One of Wander's closest police detectives is Tom Ludlow, who manages to track down a group of criminals responsible for kidnapping two Korean schoolgirls and kills them in their hideout before rescuing the girls. Although Wander and his fellow detectives, Cosmo Santos and Dante Demille and Sergeant Mike Clady are pleased with Ludlow's work despite the fact that Ludlow fired first but Ludlow manages to tamper the crime scene by using a gun of a dead gangster to fire at the door to make everyone think that the gangster shot firstLudlow's former partner Terrence Washington disapproves of his corruption and contacts Captain James Biggs of Internal Affairs, who immediately begins investigating Ludlow.

Later, Ludlow follows Washington to a convenience store to confront him for snitching on him, but they soon come under fire from two criminals who end up killing Washington. The DNA found at the crime scene is shown to belong to two criminals known as Fremont and Coates, and Washington is discovered to be in possession of a large wad of cash. The security footage makes it seem as though Ludlow had planned Washington's murder since he happened to be at the store during the time of the attackbut Wander claims that Washington was still a corrupt detective himself and had been stealing drugs from the department's evidence room and selling them to Fremont and Coates.

However, during Ludlow's investigation of the two criminals, he discovers that the real Fremont and Coates are dead and that a separate pair of criminals had been masquerading as them. Ludlow finds the criminals and kills them, only to discover that they were in fact undercover yet very corrupt LAPD deputies.

Ludlow is arrested for their murders by two detectives working for Wander, who reveal that they had planted Fremont and Coates' DNA at the convenience store when Washington was murdered since it was in fact Wander, not Ludlow, who Washington had reported to Biggs. Before the deputies can dispose of Ludlow, he manages to outsmart them due to their underestimation of Ludlow when he is tied up and kill them before traveling to Wander's house and confronting his former boss.

Wander attempts to justify his actions and the pair of them fight, culminating in Ludlow handcuffing Wander to a banister. In a last-ditch effort to save himself, Wander attempts to bribe Ludlow with the money and incriminating evidence he has been secretly storing behind a wall within his house.

However, Ludlow is disgusted by Wander's corruption and deceit and shoots him twice in the chest, killing him. Sign In Don't have an account? Start a Wiki. This is my crown.

I'm the king of secrets, Tom. I know which city councilmen is doing lines. I know who likes boys, I know who's selling contracts, I know who beat his wife.

I own them, even the chief. He's in my pocket, Tom. First thing that strikes you about this paperback is the print size. Its is tiny and tight sentances means that you have to be committed to plow your way through.

The story starts and ends brilliantly. Den is an ex band member autobiographical? He has a scoop by getting pictures of an industrialist, and friend, in a clinch at a holiday destination. Cue some strong and effective dialogue about post lady diana, state of the nation. Then the problems start. The chapters seem to be an excuse for him to rant about serbia, rwanda or whatever else is bothering him, rather than making a driving narrative to take the book forwards.

The real character, and reason for continuing the book, is London, which is once again beutifully evoked. Sometimes excellent but mainly disappointing. Here In The City - Earl Okin - Mango And Other Delights (CD) shame.

Maybe I would have liked this book more if I were a Londoner, as it does feel like it gives a good, nostalgic view of many periods of the city. And I do like the characters. Oh sure, we've seen the archetypes before in Elric, Cymoril, and Yyrkoon, in Jerry, Catherine, and Frank, but Denny, Rose, and Barbican are very much their own people, enriched by their connections to Moorcock's mythology, not lessened by it.

But the story, oh the story, it just isn't there. King of the City is pages of me Maybe I would have liked this book more if I were a Londoner, as it does feel like it gives a good, nostalgic view of many periods of the city. King of the City is pages of meandering through the history of the later 20th century with very little happening.

There's no plot, no tension, and so not a lot of interest either. Things finally click in the last 40 or 50 pages, when the Deep Fix comes back to life, but before that the book was a long, long trudge, Here In The City - Earl Okin - Mango And Other Delights (CD). I was somewhat surprised to see that it only took me two and a half months to read Its a while since I read any Moorcock.

This is a kaleidoscopic and at times pyschedelic journey through the London of the 60's and 70's which is historically detailed and inventive. It almost feels like you are reading the history of actual events as in some instances I'm sure you are. This guy is up there with Pinchon and Eco, a literary master. Apr 25, Ali Miremadi Here In The City - Earl Okin - Mango And Other Delights (CD) it it was amazing. I love this book.

Perfect sequel to the entirely different 'Mother London'. Equally good on rereading. I found this disappointing and nowhere near as entertaining as Moorcock's earlier novels.
